Investigators say LMPD's actions in separate 2023 shootings were justified

The shootings in question happened on Aug. 3 and Sept. 7 of last year.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office announced on Monday that two shootings involving Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) officers in 2023 were deemed justified.

The first happened on Aug, 3, 2023 on New Main Street in the Clifton neighborhood.

When officers arrived to the scene, they reported shots were being fired at them.

Officer Roberto Cedeno returned fire and fatally shot James Monti. He later died at the hospital.

The second police shooting was from Sept. 7, 2023. Officer Brandon Haley was conducting a traffic stop when gunfire came from a nearby home in the Chickasaw neighborhood.

Haley was critically wounded, and another officer had to drag him out of the line of fire.

A case is still ongoing, but last November, a Louisville grand jury indicted three men in connection to the shooting.

Dominique Thompson, 27, was indicted on attempted murder of a police officer, first-degree assault on a police officer, wanton endangerment, trafficking in controlled substances (meth), trafficking in controlled substances (heroin), three counts of possession of a handgun as a prohibited person, possession of a firearm as a prohibited person, receiving stolen property, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest.

Jaquan Ransom, 28, was indicted possession of a firearm as a prohibited person and resisting arrest.

Jemond Groves, 21, was indicted on possession of a handgun as a prohibited person and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Haley was released from the hospital on Sept. 25, 2023.

The LMPD internal investigations for both cases are still ongoing.
