LOUISVILLE, Ky. — When schools shut down in March, JCPS immediately activated a program to feed kids in need. Friday, they reached an incredible milestone: one million meals.
On March 16 JCPS began serving meals at 37 locations and eight mobile sites. The program has come a long way since then. Now, JCPS is operating 68 emergency food sites and has served one million meals.
The district celebrated with balloons and mascots at Indian Trail Elementary School. The goal of the program has always been to give meals to any child who needs them.
JCPS Nutrition Services went from serving about 2,500 students a day, to now more than 10,500 students on average.
"This program is critical for our families who may be facing food insecurity due to loss of jobs or other resources,” said JCPS School & Community Nutrition Services executive administrator Julia Bauscher.
School ends for the summer in about a week, but these sites will stay open and meal distribution will continue.
Some new sites could be added too.
