NELSON COUNTY, Ky. — A Nelson County man is considering himself lucky after he won $50,000 on a Kentucky Lottery Scratch-off.

Andrew Bean told lottery officials he had cashed a couple of big winners over the past several months, but the $50,000 prize is the largest so far.

“I’ve been working up to it,” Bean said.

He told officials he started playing the lottery more regularly in January and had cashed in prizes of $2,000 and $10,000 from various Scratch-off tickets.

Bean stopped at Five Star in Bardstown in early May when he bought a 500X Scratch-off ticket. Rather than scratch the ticket off, Bean scanned the barcode to see if it was a winner.

He told officials, he prefers to do it that way so he doesn’t miss any winners.

“I scanned it and it said, ‘see KLC Corp,’” he said. “This looked different from when I won the $10,000 so I pulled out my phone and scanned it and I saw $50,000."

He handed the ticket to his wife Michelle and told her he had won $1,000 and had her scratch the ticket off.

“I’m scratching it and I’m thinking, this is a lot more than $1,000,” Michelle said. “When I scanned it I was like, “Oh my god, you’ve just won $50,000!”

“I wished I had videoed her scratching it off,” he said.

Bean took home a check for $35,750 after taxes. The couple said they have been saving up for a log cabin and winning this money gives them a good start.

Five Star will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
