'They just have no respect, no morals': Louisville mother remembers son on his 16th birthday

Raymel Atkins was shot and killed September 2023 on Gaulbert Avenue. Police said he was shot inside a home and later died at the hospital.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville mother celebrated her son's 16th birthday without him on Friday.

Raymel Atkins was shot and killed September 2023 on Gaulbert Avenue.

Police said he was shot inside a home and later died at the hospital.

It's been four months, and his case is still unsolved.

While Raymel's mother, Minutte Atkins, said she wants to celebrate her son, she is still angry at the group of people who came to her house and fired shots, ultimately killing him.

"They just have no respect, no morals," Minutte said. "To come to my house, three kids, and let off I don't know how many gun shots, to where everybody could have been killed."

But now she feels uneasy in her own home.

"It makes you feel like you're going to always lose," Minutte said. "It makes you feel like, 'am I safe in my new house?' It just makes you always look over your shoulder, you just never know."

On Saturday, friends and family will mark the teenager's birthday with a balloon release.

It's planned for 4 p.m. at 21st Street and Gaulbert Avenue.
