CLARK CO., Ind. (WHAS11) -- The Clark County Health Department is working with the Indiana State Department of Health, West Clark Community Schools and the Clark County Jail to look into multiple recent cases of hepatitis A.
The health department said some of the cases were linked to an outbreak in Louisville.
As of Wednesday, several cases were found among the inmates at the Clark County Jail. More cases were identified in individuals at the elementary school in Henryville.
The county health department is working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed.
Hep A is a viral infection of the liver and is generally spread through fecal-oral routes or through consumption of contaminated food or water.
Hepatitis signs and symptoms can include:
Fatigue
Sudden nausea and vomiting
Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially on the upper right side beneath your lower ribs (by your liver)
Clay-colored bowel movements
Loss of appetite
Low-grade fever
Dark urine
Joint pain
Yellowing of the skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
Intense itching
