It’s estimated roughly 2.5 million patients were impacted by the ransomware attack last May.

A new report found a ransomware attack at one of Louisville’s largest hospital systems was among the worst cyberattacks in 2023.

In December, Norton Healthcare confirmed it was targeted in a ransomware attack last May. Officials said a months-long investigation found the attackers gained unauthorized access to certain network storage devices between May 7 and May 9.

According to the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center, the cyberattack was the seventh worst in Q4 of 2023 with approximately 2.5 million victims.

Norton Healthcare said the hospital’s medical record system and Norton MyChart were not impacted.

In a letter sent to those affected by the data breach, the individuals may have obtained patients’ names and personal information, their social security number, health and insurance information, driver’s license, financial account numbers, and digital signatures.

People whose information may have been impacted have been offered two years of free credit protection services, Norton said in its letter.

The ITRC’s report also lists the MOVEit Transfer data breaches among the worst for 2023.

Last August, officials with University of Louisville Health said a small portion of its patients were impacted by those attacks. At least 60 million worldwide had their information compromised.
