Shots fired as Bardstown police officer responds to report of disorderly person

No one was injured during the incident.

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Shots were fired after authorities responded to a report of disorderly person on Saturday night.

Around 8 p.m., the Bardstown Police Department (BPD) responded to the FiveStar, located at the 200 block of W. John Rowan Blvd.

According to an arrest citation, Bryan Smith, 47, was trying to start a fire on the premises.

Prior to the officer's arrival, documents show that Smith walked to a nearby Taco Bell and went into the bathroom.

Authorities said they were told that Smith was in the Taco Bell bathroom.

When police arrived, they said they gave Smith "loud verbal instructions" to come out of the bathroom. Officers said he came out of the bathroom "armed with a large rock" and was given instructions to drop the rock, but he refused.

Smith allegedly began walking toward officers, still refusing to drop the rock. That's when an officer fired their weapon.

Documents say Smith then set his rock on a table and complied with police.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police said Smith was arrested and charged by BPD for a previous outstanding warrant in addition to new charges including disorderly conduct, menacing, wanton endangerment, and resisting arrest.

Smith is currently booked at the Nelson Co. Detention Center.

Kentucky State Police (KSP) is leading the investigation.
