As we round the final turn into the homestretch of the holiday shopping season, we know having packages delivered and picked up can be stressful. A viewer reached out to our sister station in Washington DC, WUSA9, with some confusion over the UPS delivery policy.

The viewer said she heard UPS has a new policy of making only one delivery attempt, and package re-delivered would cost $6.

The WHAS11 Verify team reached out to UPS for some clarification on the delivery process. A spokesperson told us most packages are on "driver release," and drivers do have discretion on whether to leave a package.

"The attempts are for the high-value packages that actually require signatures or in an area where the driver says, 'You know, this doesn't feel safe for me to leave this package here,' you know, if there's not anybody home," Mayer said.

He said UPS drivers will still make 3 attempts in 3 consecutive days.

When we talk about delivery, none of us wants to be the next victim of those so-called "porch pirates."

Elizabethtown Police posted a video to its Facebook page this week showing a woman stealing a package from a doorstep and getting into a waiting truck.

To prevent something like this happening to you or your loved one, Mayer wanted the WHAS11 Verify team to pass along an alternate delivery option to give you peace of mind.

It's called Access Point -- which is a series of secure lockers popping up across Kentuckiana.

"You can redirect your deliveries either to Access Point lockers. . .or any UPS store across the city, so if you have some concerns of having a package delivered when you're not home, there's a free alternative to have it sent to a locker or sent to a UPS store," Mayer said.

Picking up from an Access Point location is free, but it will cost you to have the package re-delivered to your address.
