The Louisville-based restaurant chain Tumbleweed has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- The Louisville-based restaurant chain Tumbleweed has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The filing was made in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Louisville and listed GE Capital as Tumbleweed's biggest secured creditor, owed $18 million.

Under Chapter 11, a company is able to continue operating while it seeks to work out new arrangements with its creditors.

The company operates Tumbleweed Southwest Grill, a restaurant and bar specializing in "Tex-Mex" style food.

There are 37 company-owned or franchised Tumbleweed restaurants in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. There are two licensed restaurants located outside the U.S. -- in Germany and Kuwait.

Bankruptcy documents show the company and its franchisees employ more than 2,200 workers.
