Police release more details about I-264 accident that injured 7 people

The accident, which included an ambulance, shut down the interstate for several hours Monday afternoon.

LMPD has released their preliminary investigation of a multi-vehicle accident involving an ambulance that sent seven people to the hospital on Monday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded to a collision on I-264 eastbound near Bells Lane around 2:50 p.m.

Witnesses say that a dump truck traveling in the right lane of I-264E hit a Louisville Metro Ambulance that was stopped in the emergency lane on the right shoulder.

After impact, the dump truck continued traveling eastbound and struck a concrete barrier, where it stopped.

A third vehicle, another dump truck, was traveling in the right lane a short distance behind the first. That truck swerved to the left to avoid the collision between the first truck and the ambulance and lost control, hitting two other vehicles that were traveling in the left lane of I-264E.

In total, there were six vehicles involved: the LEMS ambulance, two dump trucks, a semi, and two passenger vehicles.

Seven patients were taken to the hospital, including a Louisville Metro EMT who sustained serious injuries, according to police. The conditions and identities of the other patients have not been released.

The interstate was shut down for several hours on Monday while police conducted their investigation.

The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating and there have been no charges filed at this time.
