Louisville-area pantries see drop in donations ahead of the new year

South Louisville Community Ministries says it's a blessing they're able to meet the Christmas demand, but they still need the community's help.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Christmas is a time for giving, but panties that rely on community generosity are saying they are not getting the donations they need.

Volunteers at South Louisville Community Ministries struggled to stock shelves and fill bags this year.

Assistant director Katie Husk said the lack of support is due to inflation and a drop in donations from community members and their main source, Dare to Care.

She said thanks to last minute donors, the nonprofit was able to giveaway food Tuesday, blessing 15 additional families.

Though the shelves were full today, Husk said it may change in a week.

"It's very much a roller coaster of supply and demand for all of the sites not just us," she said.

Husk adds that even the smallest donation makes a difference.

"People think it has to be a big donation or an entire trunk of can goods in their car. And what we find is it can just be one bag of things," she said. "And the wonderful thing about the community is if everybody brings just a little tiny bit, it ends up filling the room as you can see."

South Louisville Community Ministries is hosting a fresh produce giveaway Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon.
