LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If you're looking for somewhere to travel in the new year, you might not have to look very far.

Travel + Leisure has named Louisville one of the 50 best places to travel in 2024.

"The Kentucky Derby will celebrate its 150th anniversary on May 4, 2024, as well as the debut of the redesigned Churchill Downs Paddock, which is coming off a multiyear, $200-million renovation," Travel + Leisure Reporter Elizabeth Rhodes wrote.

Louisville was listed in the "for big-city thrills" category among other top destinations from across the world including Paris, France; Bangkok, Thailand; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Staying in theme with Derby, Rhodes suggested people visit the Kentucky Derby Museum to "brush up on the event's history and culture year-round." She said visitors could stay at the Derby City Hotel, which opens this summer with 168 rooms plus a rooftop pool and bar, or they could stay at another new property like The Myriad Hotel, Common Bond Hotel Collection, or Hotel Genevieve.

Rhodes also highlighted "Ali", a musical about "the Greatest", which will open at the Kentucky Center in fall 2024.

"There’s news on the spirits scene, too, including the launch of Bourbon and Belonging – Kentucky’s Queer Bourbon Week, a statewide celebration running Oct. 3-6, 2024, that will have events in Louisville and beyond," Rhodes said.

In addition to all of this, Louisville is home to some other notable attractions including Slugger Museum, the Louisville Mega Cavern, the Louisville Zoo, the Kentucky Science Center, and Waterfront Park.
