HORSE CAVE, Ky. — Two people are in the hospital after a serious crash involving a train in Hart County early on New Year's Day.

Kentucky State Police (KSP) said a vehicle traveling west on West Main Street in Horse Cave was trying to cross the railroad tracks at Guthrie Street around midnight.

Horse Cave is about an hour south of Louisville.

According to police, a preliminary investigation determined the driver tried crossing the tracks as the railroad crossing arms were lowering. It was then struck by a CSX train that was heading south.

Both the driver and passenger in the vehicle were airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Their exact condition at this time is unknown.

KSP is investigating the crash. Hart county EMS, Hart county fire, CSX and KSP personnel assisted at the scene.
