Lawsuit accuses Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment of tip theft

The plaintiffs are suing for the company to repay the value of all the tips they say were unlawfully retained.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One of Louisville's most popular steakhouses is facing litigation with employees taking on the company that owns Jeff Ruby's.

A class action lawsuit has been filed in Ohio accusing Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment of tip theft.

The former and current employees accused the company of requiring tip credit employees, like servers and bartenders, to pay into a "tip pool." Then unlawfully using part of that pool money to pay "back of the house" employees who do not earn tips and often do not interact with customers.

The lawsuit also claims the company required tip employees to spend a significant amount of time performing "non-tip producing duties" while still being paid below minimum wage.

The plaintiffs are suing for the company to repay the value of all the tips they say were unlawfully retained.
