Southern Indiana fire department confirms infant surrendered in Safe Haven Baby Box

The infant was surrendered last week at the Georgetown Township Fire Protection District, according to officials. It was the first surrender of the year.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — More than a year after a Safe Haven Baby Box was installed at the Georgetown Township Fire Protection District, officials confirm a baby was surrendered.

Fire Chief William Banta said they found out about the infant when they received a notification of a “baby box” activation. Crews went to the box and discovered the infant.

“The needs of the infant were attended to promptly, and the proper notifications were made,” Banta said in a statement. “The thoughts and prayers of the GTFD are with everyone involved with this situation.”

The baby box was installed at the fire department in December 2022. It was the first surrender of 2024.

Officials plan to hold a media briefing about the infant at the Georgetown Township Fire Department on Jan. 22 at 11 a.m.

According to Safe Haven Baby Box, nearly 40 infants have been placed in a baby box while more than 140 surrenders have resulted from calling their national hotline.

The baby boxes can be found throughout Kentucky and Indiana.
