Officials warn people of 'missing court appearance' scams

GRANT COUNTY, Ind. — One Indiana sheriff's office is warning Hoosiers of a scam that could cost them thousands of dollars.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office shared that it has had multiple reports of people falsely identifying themselves as a police captain and making calls to residents claiming they missed a court appearance and need to pay for it.

GCSO officials said they would never contact a person by phone for missing court appearances and will not request money for it.

They are urging people to not engage with the caller or provide them with any personal information. Officials say to hang up immediately and contact your local police department to report the incident.
