Homemade gun explodes, killing southern Indiana man: police

Scott M. Powers, 39, of Clarksville was pronounced dead at a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital after the incident Saturday morning, police said.

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. — A southern Indiana man has died after his homemade gun exploded while he fired it, Indiana State Police said Monday.

Scott M. Powers, 39, of Clarksville was pronounced dead at a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital after the incident Saturday morning, police said.

Powers was with a friend in a wooded area in Scottsburg when he fired the weapon sometimes referred to as a “slam-fire” and containing a 12-gauge shotgun, police said. The barrel exploded, injuring Powers in the neck.

His friend rushed him to a local hospital before he was airlifted to the Louisville hospital.

The Kentucky Medical Examiner performed an autopsy Monday and ruled the death accidental, police said. Investigators believe Powers made the weapon himself.
