Lakers star D'Angelo Russell gives back to community with $100K donation to Algonquin Park for upgrades

He grew up in the neighborhood and wants to give back to the park that helped get him to where he is today.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville native and Los Angeles Lakers star D’Angelo Russell is giving back to his neighborhood.

Russell’s foundation is donating $100,000 to go towards upgrades in Algonquin Park.

He grew up in the neighborhood and near the park, playing basketball there as a kid.

Russell said he and his foundation wanted to provide access for kids to be as creative as they want.

“I was raised here. This grew me. These parks gave me accessibility to do what I wanted to do and to do what I'm doing now. I didn't have an indoor gym. I didn't have a trainer. During the cold [and] during the heat when weather was playing a major factor, I was in this park trying to get it in,” he said.

The funds will go toward giving the park a new look and will add features like a fitness center that looks like a playground.

Louisville Parks and Recreation has not announced when renovations will start.
