Campbellsville student accused of strangling fellow student to death indicted on murder, burglary charges

Charles Escalera, 21, is accused of strangling a fellow student and wrestling teammate to death in February.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A Campbellsville University student was indicted by a grand jury last week in the deadly strangulation of fellow student and wrestling teammate, Josiah Kilman, 18, who was killed in February.

A Taylor County Grand Jury indicted Charles Escalera, 21, last Tuesday on charges of murder, burglary (third degree) and theft by unlawful taking.

Escalera is currently being held on a $1 million full cash bond. He is scheduled to be back in court on May 7.

CASE BACKGROUND

On Feb. 24, Josiah Kilman was found unresponsive in his dorm room at Campbellsville University. He died in the hospital shortly after he was found.

Less than 24 hours after his death, another student and fellow wrestling teammate Charles Escalera was arrested and charged with murder. He is also charged with burglary after police say he broke into someone's home and stole food while on the run after Kilman's death.

An autopsy confirmed Kilman had died from asphyxia or strangulation.
