LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A major bridge connecting Louisville to southern Indiana is expected to stay closed until the weekend due to a serious crash Friday.

The Clark Memorial Bridge, or Second Street Bridge, isn’t expected to reopen until Saturday morning while crews work to remove a semi-truck that’s hanging over the side of the bridge.

It’s unclear exactly how the crash occurred, but a daring rescue was caught on camera as the driver of the semi was trapped inside the vehicle following the crash. Two other people in another vehicle were seriously injured, according to authorities.

There are several other bridges drivers looking to cross the Ohio River can take to bypass the closure, but many are toll bridges.

Alternate Routes

  • I 65 – Lincoln Bridge and Kennedy Bridge (Toll bridges)
  • I-64 – Sherman Minton Bridge
  • I-265 near Prospect – Lewis and Clark Bridge (Toll bridge)

Due to many drivers seeking these alternate routes, traffic on the Sherman Minton and Lincoln and Kennedy bridges is heavily backed up as of 4 p.m.

The best route to take is the Lewis and Clark Bridge, however I-71 East is experiencing some delays.

In a Friday afternoon news conference, Mayor Craig Greenberg urged drivers to use caution no matter which route they take.

"Make sue to plan ahead of time, give yourself plenty of time,” he said. “[And] please be patient, please take your time, please travel safely.”
