Bardstown's American Greetings will begin layoffs leading to 2019 closure

The layoffs are expected to begin on Sept. 7, 2018.

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WHAS11) -- American Greetings, located in Bardstown, Ky., has released more details on layoffs that will lead to the company closing in early 2019.

The company said in a release dated on July 3, the layoffs are expected to start on Sept. 7, 2018, this layoff is expected to impact 123 employees. Eight weeks after the first layoff there is a second layoff that will impact seven people. A third layoff will occur on Nov. 9, 2018, impacting 55 employees. A fourth layoff will happen on Dec. 7, 2018, impacting 65 people. The final wave of layoffs will be on Feb. 28, 2019, this wave will lay off the remaining employees.

In March 2018 the company employed about 450 people.

That facility opened in 1984 and was responsible for greeting card manufacturing.

American Greetings in Bardstown was known at one time for producing Christmas cards for the nation's President.

The company said the layoffs are expected to be permanent.
