Brett Hankison's federal trial to begin soon

He is accused of using excessive force when he fired 10 rounds into Taylor's apartment while standing outside of it.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After several delays, the federal trial for the former Louisville Metro Police officer who fired blindly into Breonna Taylor's apartment is set to begin.

Brett Hankison is expected in court Monday. He is accused of using excessive force when he fired 10 rounds into Taylor's apartment while standing outside of it.

His bullets entered a neighboring apartment where a young child was sleeping.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said Hankison used unlawful excessive force and therefore violated the civil rights of Taylor and her neighbors.

A Jefferson County jury acquitted Hankison on state charges of endangering Taylor's next door neighbor in 2022.

Hankison is one of four people charged in relation to Taylor's death.
