Woman shot, killed by police officer in southern Indiana

Investigators say the woman came at officers with a knife before an officer fatally shot her.

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed by an officer Tuesday after officials say she came at the officers with a knife.

At about 7 p.m., officers with the North Vernon Police Department and Jennings County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance at a residence on Thomas Street in North Vernon, Ind., according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Officers on scene found Rachel Blake inside the bathroom of the home, holding a large knife. ISP officials say officers repeatedly told her to drop the knife and used tasers in an attempt to disarm her.

Soon after, Blake advanced towards the officers with the knife and two officers from the North Vernon Police Department fired their handguns, striking Blake at least once, according to the news release.

Officers rendered first aid and EMS was called to the scene to provide advanced medical treatment. Blake was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jennings County Coroner's Office.

Indiana State Police is leading the investigation into this officer-involved shooting. All involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.
