Heads up Kia drivers! The automaker is installing free anti-theft software to impacted car owners

Technicians are installing the updates to Kia vehicles made between 2011 and 2021 that use a metal key to start the ignition.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Head's up Kia drivers, social media trends are showing just how easy it is to steal your vehicle and the automaker is offering anti-theft upgrades.

Just behind Oxmoor Mall the retailer has opened up a pop-up shop, and they are encouraging anyone who owns a Kia model between the years 2011-2021 to stop by and receive the quick installation this weekend.

Technicians are installing software into certain modeled vehicles that are vulnerable to being stolen. It only takes about 15 minutes and it's bringing relief to many drivers.

Louisville resident Cindy Redmon said she's never had any issues with her 2019 Kia.

"I really like the car," Redmon said. "We've traveled to Florida in it several times and it's never given us a problem."

Redmon has never had her car broken into, but it's always been in the back of her mind.

"I always lock my car, Redmon said. "I always lock it when I go anywhere."

A quick software installation that activates when you lock the car, and a warning sticker aim to deter thieves from wanting to break into the vehicle.

James Bell, head of corporate communications for Kia America. said once a customer's car is taken under their tent that they attach a small device to the car's computer system.

"That device speaks to an iPad and just like on your phone when you upgrade and download a new software you push a button and it just does its work," Bell said.

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, as of April 16, 764 Hyundai and Kia's have been stolen. That's why the department started Operation H.E.A.T. (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) and are offering free wheel locks to impacted owners whose cars could be impacted.

In a statement, LMPD said, "the distribution is being handled at the division level and those commanders are working on the best way to distribute them to those individuals who may need one."

"We know how bad the situation has been and I think it pays to mention that it's really affecting vehicles that use a steel key to turn and start the car," Bell said.

Redmon said despite the concerns she has no intention of trading in her car.

"We keep it maintained and we don't have an ounce of problem with it so we are satisfied with the car," Redmon said.

It was a quick and easy process for her, and within 30 minutes Redmon was back in her car and driving away.

The event will continue tomorrow at Oxmoor Mall behind Top Golf from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
If you can make it out to the mall, then you're encouraged to contact dealerships in Louisville, Clarksville or Elizabethtown.
