Florists, moving companies try to navigate amid rising gas prices in effort to not increase consumer prices

Gas prices are hitting all drivers hard, and for businesses that rely on driving, the cost can impact their bottom line.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gas prices have remained high this week, with the average cost of a gallon in Jefferson County sitting at $4.23.

While prices at the pump are hitting all drivers, businesses that rely on driving are feeling the extra strain.

At Belmar Floral Events, manager Robbie Gibson said they're avoiding passing the extra cost of fuel on to their customers.

"Delivery is a very big part of our game ," he said. "we try to build that into our delivery so that we don't have to nickel and dime the customers for everything that comes about and changes."

With average prices statewide hovering around $4.00 a gallon, Gibson said, for now, the business will be okay without raising prices.

"We will absorb this probably for a month or two," he said.

Like Southern Indiana-based Kentuckiana Moving, professional movers are also managing through the high prices.

Owner Jonathan Richards said its a trend they've seen for a while.

"It's not just in the last month, we've seen it in the last year," he said.

Richards also plans to keep prices stable. He said with lots of competition in the moving market, raising his prices would only lose his business.

"They want to keep consistent cash flow and keep their guys working, they don't want to lose any guys especially with the summer season coming up," he said.

Richards said in his business, it would be more cost-effective to only take jobs at larger homes with more work to do, instead of short local trips, if gas prices are high for a long time.

Gibson, at Belmar, is coming up with backup plans.

"If it's further out from us we may try to call and make sure we set up a time and a date to get their delivery done before wasting so much time and gas," he said of some deliveries.

Gibson said one benefit of the floral industry in Louisville is their co-op with other florists. It allows them to centralize deliveries and keep costs low.
