LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Looking to adopt? Well now is a better time than ever!
From May 1-15, BISSELL Pet Foundation is working with the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) to host its national 'Empty the Shelters' event. Adoption fees will be waived for all KHS dogs six months and older, and for all animals at Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS).
Officials said adopters will still be responsible for their licensing fee, which is $10.50, and donations are always appreciated.
"Our nation's animal shelters are facing a capacity crisis and need your help now. Adoptions have slowed while a surge in owner surrenders dur to families facing economic and housing challenges has left tens of thousands of highly adoptable pets desperate to find homes," Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, said. "Our Spring National 'Empty the Shelters' will support the adoption of thousands of pets across the country, helping shelters in this critical time. Opening your home to a shelter pet saves a life and creates a lifesaving space to help another pet in need."
Officials said this effort has helped nearly 226,000 pets across the country find their new home.
Here is the list of participating locations:
Kentucky Humane Society
- Main Campus, 241 Steedly Drive, will process adoption applications Monday-Friday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- East Campus, 1000 Lyndon Lane, will process adoption applications Monday-Friday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Closed May 10 and 11)
Louisville Metro Animal Services
- Animal House, 3516 Newburg Road, will process adoption applications every day from 12-5:30 p.m. and from 12-6:30 p.m. on Fridays
Hammer’s Lou Adopts: Saturday, May 11
- Adoptable dogs and puppies from both KHS and LMAS will be at LOU Adopts! Mega Adoption Event at the Kentucky Exposition Center Pavilion. Applications will be processed 12 - 4 p.m.
- KHS Main Campus be open as normal and will process adoptions 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- KHS East Campus will be closed.
- LMAS Animal House will be closed.
