LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Metro Council heard from Louisville's Department of Correction members as they worked through the mayor's budget proposal.
The mayor has proposed nearly $64 million toward the Department of Corrections.
Department leaders say they've made a lot of changes to the department that has been plagued by issues.
They include a new health care provider and new technology to help improve the physical and mental health of inmates, including Vital monitors.
"It's been around not in in corrections," Col. Jerry Collins, director of LMDC, said. "It's used in health care facilities, such as nursing homes and hospitals. And what it does, we're placing those in our single cells, which are the high risk areas, obviously, for folks with suicide to help prevent suicides. And it's a radar technology that monitors vitals."
Metro Council has until June to vote on the proposed budget.
