'Don't get me emotional, because I love my community': Book about life in Russell neighborhood launches

Community leaders said this book tells the true story of the strength of the Russell community.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A book that tells the story of the Russell neighborhood through the eyes of those that live there launched on Thursday.

The project is part of The Louisville Story Program.

The book’s title is, "If You Write Me a Letter, Send It Here: Voices of Russell in a Time of Change."

The Louisville Story Program brought the authors together. The organization highlights various communities and topics across Louisville and has even published a book about the history of the Dirt Bowl, a staple event in Shawnee.

"It was the place to be, it was a place everybody wanted to be,” Haven Harrington told WHAS11 News back in December. He’s one of the book's authors. “It had all your restaurants, all your stores, all your clubs and happenings. You can see anybody in concert there. If you're the older generation, Duke Ellington, Count Basie.”

Thursday night, they hosted an event to launch the book and celebrate the authors.

Community leaders said this book tells the true story of the strength of the Russell community.

"My community is full of love, my community is full of strong, black, folks. In spite of being, having one high school to go to we produce doctors, lawyers, tellers, hairdressers; don't get me emotional, because I love my community," resident Jackie Flynn said.

If you want to buy the book, you can do so on their website.
