LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in Frankfort are pushing for a pay raise for the General Assembly.

Senator Damon Thayer, R-District 17, is currently in his last term. On his way out, the Majority Leader wants SB 350 to establish higher pay for state legislators.

It would include $105,000 for future majority floor leaders like himself.

"I think this notion that Kentucky's legislature is part time and should be compensated accordingly is out of fashion and out of date," Thayer said.

Rep. Josie Raymond, D-District 41, is also leaving Frankfort and proposed a similar bill in the Kentucky House.

She said it would set a standard pay rate at $60,000 with higher rates for committee chairs and leadership.

“Someone said to me, ‘it’s a legislator pay raise’ and I said, ‘some people will get a pay raise, and quite a few others will get a reduction’,” she explained.

Senator Thayer’s bill was introduced on Feb. 28 while Rep. Raymond’s on Jan. 29.

Neither has gained any traction just yet.
