The $840 million project will include a full-service hospital with 104 beds dedication to serving local veterans.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Crews "topped off" their work on Thursday over at the Louisville Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The event celebrated the "topping out" of the last structural beam of the building with time-honored traditions of both the United States military and building construction.

The $840 million project will include a full-service hospital with 104 beds dedication to serving local veterans.

The new facility will replace the Robley Rex VA Medical Center on Zorn Avenue, allowing for better service and care.

"You look at the sacred duty we have to provide healthcare to our veterans, and we are meeting that duty, we are meeting our calling," Gov. Andy Beshear said at the ceremony. "They sacrificed for us, we then take care of them. This is going to be the newest, most state-of-the-art facility in the country; that means we can provide the very best care for our veterans right here in Louisville, Kentucky."

He said while this almost billion dollar project has taken some time he said it's "absolutely worth it."

"Again, you are going to have the most state-of-the-art facility, so serving our veterans when this is done, that's going to be pretty special," Beshear said.
