Urban League closer to building new complex thanks to $3 million donation

The James Graham Brown Foundation donated $3 million to the Louisville Urban League for a new sports and learning complex.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — A major gift was announced Monday to help create a facility aimed at revitalizing West Louisville.

The James Graham Brown Foundation donated $3 million to the Louisville Urban League for a new sports and learning complex.

The facility, which would include an indoor track, is planned at the Heritage West space at 30th and Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

The city of Louisville has agreed to provide $10 million for the project, but the rest of the $30 million price tag falls on the Urban League.

"It is the one project being proposed in the West End that will bring 20,000-30,000 people with disposable income into this community and that's exactly what we need," said Urban League President Sadiqa Reynolds. "We need to create something that draws others in and that really does create some investment in the West End."

Reynolds also challenged the community to help raise the rest of the money they need for the project.

The Louisville Urban League hopes to break ground next year with plans to complete the facility by 2020.
