'I got lucky': Prospect resident describes moment before likely tornado hit

WHAS11 spoke with Tom, a resident who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 15 years. He said he couldn’t believe what he saw.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One day before the 50th anniversary of 1974 tornadoes that devastated Louisville, residents in Prospect were impacted by a likely tornado that stemmed from an outbreak of severe weather on Tuesday.

The tornado is believed to have originated in eastern Clark County, Indiana and crossed over into Louisville, impacting communities near the East End Bridge.

Homes in the subdivision near Prospect suffered roof damage, downed trees and power outages.

WHAS11 spoke with Tom, a resident who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 15 years. He said he couldn’t believe what he saw.

“I came out about five minutes before this hit. I heard this, like everybody says, when they talk about tornadoes this freight train type sound and I’m thinking like oh my goodness, I better get in,” he recalled. “I went down to the basement and lost power, heard all these things happening around the neighborhood and this is what I see when I walked up. Finally, was brave enough to come outside.”

Tom said the torrential rains made it hard to see from his back porch. He even described hearing sounds of trees falling down.

“Never in my life have I seen anything like this. I’ve seen some pretty bad storms since I’ve lived here – the ice storm and things like that, but that was not like this was,” he said.

After the storm, neighbors began checking on each other to make sure they were okay. Through it all, Tom considers himself “lucky.”

“I don’t have any power and I’m feeling sorry for myself like most people do when they don’t see what else is happening in this vicinity. Now that I’ve seen it, it’s like, I got lucky,” he said.

Tom also told WHAS11 News he wasn’t sure if he would be able to get to work on Wednesday but said he may have to get there to “charge his phone.”
