President approves federal disaster relief for April tornadoes in Kentucky

The governor said additional counties could be added after more damage assessments are finished.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — President Joe Biden approved a federal disaster declaration for 19 tornadoes that touched down across the Commonwealth in early April.

Gov. Andy Beshear requested the declaration after the storm.

The approval makes funding available for cleanup in Jefferson, Oldham, Fayette, and several other Kentucky counties impacted by the tornadoes on April 2 and April 3 according to the governor's office.

The governor said additional counties could be added after more damage assessments are finished.

“We are thankful to President Biden and his administration for approving this funding, which will be a big help for our families and communities recovering from these devastating tornadoes and storms,” Beshear said. “We continue to thank our first responders and those continuing cleanup efforts for their unwavering support.”

The National Weather Service said EF-1 tornadoes hit Nelson, Anderson and Henry counties, while an EF-2 touched down in Prospect, Kentucky along the Jefferson-Oldham county line.
