Old Bardstown Road lights going up for auction; How to bid

A longtime traffic quirk that is truly Louisville, the lights were removed almost two years ago in the spring of 2022 to improve pedestrian safety.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Starting Wednesday, Louisvillians will have the chance to bid on a unique piece of Bardstown Road history.

Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the city will soon start auctioning off the old Bardstown Road street lights.

A longtime traffic quirk that is truly Louisville, the lights were removed almost two years ago in the spring of 2022 to improve pedestrian safety after a series of safety studies.

Ever since then, 55 lights have been sitting in storage.

The mayor said they'll be auctioned off online, with half of the proceeds going to sidewalk repairs on Bardstown Road and the other half going to the city's complete streets coalition to improve roads and sidewalks across all of Louisville.

It was actually Jack Harlow's mom who came up with the idea to sell them to the public.

"Seeing these signs removed I knew I had to have one, I needed to savor the nostalgia of old Bardstown Road, and then it occurred to me, that maybe others would want to own a little bit of Highlands history," Maggie Harlow said. "I was thrilled when I mentioned the idea, just in passing, to Mayor Greenberg, and he immediately put me in contact with Public Works and the idea was put into motion."

If you want to own one, you can place a bid here.
