Metro Council passes tree canopy ordinance

The new version says any tree removed from the public right-of-way has to be replaced with the cost falling on the property owner.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) –After a year of debate, the Metro Council passed a Tree Ordinance for the city of Louisville.

The hope is this ordinance could help reduce the heat island effect that keeps Louisville extra warm. It makes changes to the existing tree ordinance that was established back in 1988.

The new version says any tree removed from the public right-of-way has to be replaced with the cost falling on the property owner.

The ordinance created a Community Forestry Escrow Fund to help low-income families pay for the removal and re-planting costs

The ordinance now goes to Mayor Greg Fischer's office for his signature.
