Louisville officials attempt to tackle squatting in abandoned properties; How you can help

The pilot program will start in the neighborhood north of Market Street, going all the way from 18th Street to 26th Street.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville officials announced a new program on Wednesday that would make a comprehensive list of abandoned properties in the metro, and hopefully cut down on squatting.

But the city is asking for the community's help.

The pilot program will start in the neighborhood north of Market Street, going all the way from 18th Street to 26th Street.

Code enforcement officers will go home to home, do visual inspections of the property, and then create the comprehensive list.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) will help in case people are illegally living on a property.

But they need the community's help to report anything suspicious.

"If you know of any vacant properties near your home, our team will attempt to contact the owners of vacant properties and will coordinate with LMPD to clear and secure the property," Councilwoman Donna Purvis of District 5 said.

Part of the goal is to cut down on fires in the neighborhood.

"Vacant homes we all know they pose a threat to the general public," Purvis said. "I'm so very happy to say they finally heard my cry."

Codes and Regulation Director Richard Price said in the designated area, they've had more than 80 fire calls.

The inspected homes will be boarded with clear board instead of plywood for more safety.
