Logan Street Market close to opening this summer

A warehouse space in the Shelby Park neighborhood is being transformed into a food market with over 30 vendors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A new market where food and drink meet shopping and community is taking shape in the Shelby Park neighborhood.

The Logan Street Market is the first of its kind in Louisville, a warehouse space on Logan and Kentucky streets that will hold more than 30 vendors when it opens this summer.

"Pretty much anything you could imagine under one roof," Sarah Height said.

Height is the market's director. She described the work that will be finished in the coming weeks. On Wednesday, construction crews were focused on wiring. In the next few weeks, the vendor spaces will be ready for them to move in and start setting up their spaces.

Four restaurants, event space, and local vendors selling fresh food and specialty groceries will all be under one roof. Height said there will be specialty groceries, produce, ice cream, a juice bar, and more.

The market aims to fill a food gap and be an "economic anchor" for the Shelby Park neighborhood.

"An area where everybody can go and everybody's welcome," Height said.

The market was a concept born by Mike Safai, owner of Safai Coffee, two years ago. The market expects to see between 500,000 and 750,000 visitors annually. Height said the market will also attract tourists.

"To taste the local flare knowing that their money is going to local businesses," she said.

Safai's vision was a space that acts as a "business incubator" and where the community could connect. Height said the market concept works well for small businesses, so they don't necessarily need to build their own brick and mortar space to be able to operate.

“Gathering around food is really the most natural way for people to share and learn and grow,” Height said. “It’s really big and we’re so happy about it.”

The market is planned to open to the public by the end of July.

"The buzz is pretty crazy, I don't sleep much anymore," Height said.
