LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Two LMPD officers are on administrative leave following an incident in which they fatally shot an armed robbery suspect.
Officer John Dillon who has been on the force since September 2015, and Officer Nick Ulery, with the department since February 2016, both discharged their weapons during an incident at an industrial park on Fern Valley Rd. that ultimately led to a man dying.
Police were responding to a call of an assault. Forty-five minutes later, police received a tip that it may be an armed robbery.
According to police, the suspect, Corey Boykin Jr., 24, exited the building holding a handgun. That’s when officers fired their weapons, which was captured on body camera video, although LMPD Chief Steve Conrad said they don’t show the full story, despite several angles.
“None of these videos offers a complete view of what occurred last night, please understand that body worn video is just one part of a complete and thorough investigation,” explained Conrad.
In the body camera video, it is not clear if the officers told Boykin to drop his weapon.
“And that's another one of the matters that we're still gathering with this being early. We can't give a definitive finding on that since it's being so early,” said Major Frank Hardison with LMPD Public Integrity Unit.
The Boykin was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Inside the building, a victim was found bound with duct tape and pistol whipped.
“They were rescued from that location, they were taken to University Hospital by our officers. That victim was treated, and released and is now home resting safely,” said Hardison.
Officers John Dillon and Nick Ulery were placed on administrative leave as is standard practice.
To be transparent, LMPD released the officers’ body camera footage in less than 24 hrs. Those videos have been uploaded to LMPD’s YouTube channel.
LMPD's Public Integrity Unit is still investigating the incident and Major Hardison said it's far from over. Surveillance cameras will also be studied, as well as continuing to collect statements from witnesses and other evidence.
Police say there is a third person involved, but they haven't said how.
