Kentucky man in disbelief after winning $50,000 Powerball prize; 'You're kidding me?'

Sanford Meyers was so surprised, he asked the store clerk to scan his winning ticket three times. "I still can't believe it," he said.

LEITCHFIELD, Ky. — Lucky finally struck a Grayson County man, who won $50,000 on the Powerball earlier this month, Kentucky Lottery officials said Thursday.

Sanford Meyers' said he doesn't play often, but usually buys a Powerball ticket once a month. Meyers recently purchased a ticket from the Center Court Food Mart on Brandenburg Road in Leitchfield.

He said he left the ticket on his desk for several days before checking it.

"I told my wife I need to look at that thing," Meyers said. "I pulled up the website and look at [the ticket] and said, ' I think I won a hundred and fifty bucks.'"

Sanford Meyers holds his winning check for $36,000 after winning the Powerball on May 4.

Myers' ticket matched four white ball numbers and the Powerball in the May 4 drawing, earning him the game's $50,000 prize. He took the ticket back to Center Court Food Mart to get it checked.

"[The store clerk] scanned it and said, '$50,000,'" he recalled. "I said, 'You're kidding me?' I made her scan it at least three times! I'm happy, I still can't believe it though."

The Leitchfield man showed up to the Kentucky Lottery's headquarters in Louisville on May 9. He received a check for $36,000 after tax and said he doesn't have any immediate plans for the money.

"I don't get too excited," Meyers added. "I'll wait until I have the check in the bank."

The store will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket, lottery officials said.
