JCPS parent anxiously awaits for board to choose new school start time

A parent that spoke with WHAS11 News wonders how the possible start time adjustment will affect her family.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In one week, the Jefferson County School Board will vote, choosing new starting times for all schools beginning in August.

"I'm still skeptical about how it's going to work," Tiandra Robinson, a parent, said.

There are three proposed start times for next year – 7:30 a.m., 8:40 a.m., and 9:40 a.m.

Robinson said the district's first option works best for her daughter who attends a magnet school.

More than 80 schools would be affected in option one with an estimated later clear time around 6:30 p.m. and more than 100 schools will be impacted in option two.

Robinson said if the district chooses option two, it puts her in a situation where she will have to figure out a way to get her daughter home from school.

JCPS parent Tiandra Robinson discuss Jefferson Co. Public Schools proposed start times as the district held a virtual meeting on Apr. 30, 2024.

"It's already a hardship trying to do it for the morning, so I'll probably have to use vacation time to get off to be able to make sure I can pick her up," she said.

JCPS superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said option two would be best for the district. It will cut major delays and allows more than an hour to operate depots.

"It is a much more dramatic change in start times and gets us there on time, but I think long-term, option two is the more sustainable one," Pollio said.

Robinson just hopes there will be a smoother start to the school year.

"Hopefully, they are going to start practicing these routes way earlier than what they did last year," she said.

Pollio shared the district is collaboratively working with TARC and UPS to make sure routes are efficient.

He said TARC is still working out a plan, between now and the end of May.

"When it comes to the amount of drivers that they have and how many would want to come to JCPS, when we get those numbers we will be able to make those adjustments," Pollio said.

Until then, Robinson is anxiously waiting to see which option the board chooses.

"It looks like there is a lot of moving parts, but we'll see."

The Jefferson County school board will decide on what the new start times will be in a special meeting on Tuesday May 7.
