Mental evaluation ordered for suspect in law enforcement bombing case

A federal judge this week ordered a mental evaluation for a Madison Indiana man accused of targeting members of law and government buildings with explosives.

MADISON, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A federal judge this week ordered a mental evaluation for a Madison Indiana man accused of targeting members of law and government buildings with explosives.

According to the order obtained by WHAS11, the Bureau of Prisons will designate the facility to examine David Theiring.

"The assertions of the Defendant that he is Jesus Christ and that his posts on social media originate with the White House, the CIA and other government entities raise the question of whether Mr. Theiring would be able to assist his counsel properly in his defense," Theiring's lawyer Larry Simon wrote in the motion requesting the evaluation.

On Theiring's Facebook, angry posts seemed to be directed towards police. “You're on candid camera, you suck,” one post read. “When I die, you die so eliminating me does not help your problem,” another post added.

Simon said he could not find any confirmation of Theiring, 37, having been treated previously for any mental disease or condition.

A federal grand jury indicted Theiring on explosives and weapons charges in May.

At one of the incidents police investigated, one device blew up in the Madison Police Department parking lot. A little more than a week later, another pipe bomb exploded in front of a judge's home. There was also a safe found in an open parking lot, which while later discovered empty, still caused alarm.

“Striking fear into the heart of a community will not be tolerated,” United States Attorney Josh Minkler said in announcing the indictment, “Those who use violence directed at the criminal justice system or any of its members will be held strictly accountable.”

If convicted on the new charges, Theiring faces 20 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $500,000.
