Former Ky. Gov. John Y. Brown, his late father honored with Georgia Powers legacy award

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Former Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown and his late father Congressman John Y. Brown Senior, both receiving awards on April 26.

They received the Senator Georgia Powers legacy award. This award is all part of the 50th anniversary Kentucky Fair Housing Conference.

It's given to leaders for their dedication to civil rights and social justice in Kentucky.

Congressman Brown, the Youngest Speaker of the House in Kentucky History, was the author and sponsor of the Kentucky Civil Rights Act of 1966.

Governor Brown was the first Kentucky Governor to appoint an African American in his cabinet and a woman serve as a Cabinet Secretary.

He turned KFC into the largest restaurant chain in the world.

Georgia Davis Powers was the first African-American and woman elected to the Kentucky State Senate.

She was an influential member of the Civil Rights Movement, and a confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
