Committee to decide on Castleman statue relocation in January

The city filed paperwork to relocate the John Breckinridge Castleman statue to Cherokee Triangle Architectural Review Committee, who is expected to discuss the proposal in January.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After multiple public meetings and hundreds of comments from residents, Mayor Greg Fischer announced that the city has filed paperwork to continue the process of relocating the John Breckinridge Castleman statue from the Cherokee Triangle.

The city filed for a certificate from the Cherokee Triangle Architectural Review Committee, who will then discuss the proposal in a public meeting set for January 23.

If the Committee approves the certificate, the city can remove the statue. If the certificate is denied, the city can appeal that decision to the full Landmarks Commission.

Fischer announced his decision to relocate the Castleman statue and the George Dennison Prentice statue from the main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library in August. The decision came after a review of a report issued on June 30 by the Public Art and Monuments Advisory Committee.

The Prentice statue was moved to a storage facility on Lexington Road earlier this month, and the Castleman statue is expected to relocate to Cave Hill Cemetery where the Castleman family is buried.
