CEO: Derby City Gaming Downtown doing 'modestly' well

The CEO of Churchill Downs Inc., Bill Carstanjen, revealed how the location is doing in a conference call this week.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This will be the first Derby week for the new Derby City Gaming Downtown, owned by Churchill Downs.

The CEO of Churchill Downs Inc., Bill Carstanjen, revealed how the location is doing in a conference call this week.

"We thought it would start relatively modestly because a big component of its business is going to be driven by tourism and downtown traffic and opening in December in the height of winter in Louisville is not the ideal time to open," he said.

"I'd say it started relatively modest; its not a material contributor to the Kentucky HR engine that we've established, but it's moving in the right direction and about where we thought would be. Let's get some of these spring and summer months under our belt."

During the conference call, Churchill Downs Inc. overall reported record revenue for the first three months of 2024, up 6%.

The Kentucky Oaks and Derby 150 are expected to be eye-opening as well.
