Kentucky adds 16th 'Baby Box' at Louisville fire station

The new Baby Box was 'blessed' at Engine 16 on Tuesday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky’s 16th Safe Haven Baby Box was dedicated Tuesday in honor of a Louisville firefighter and her daughter.

The box is located at Louisville Fire Department’s Engine 16 on South Sixth Street.

Baby boxes allow mothers to safely surrender their infants and remain anonymous.

This particular box was funded with the help from the Lesley and Rhyan Prather Foundation.

Lesley, a Louisville firefighter, and her daughter Rhyan were killed in a 2020 crash while on the way to a volleyball tournament.

The foundation president, and Lesley’s brother-in-law Terry Hall, said the two loved babies and this project is a way to honor their legacy.

“Lesley would want this. Lesley had a desire to fight fires, to save lives, to impact her community, and she's still doing that today not only through this foundation, but through this baby box,” he said.

Twenty-one infants have been placed in a Baby Box since 2017.
