Attorney: Incident involving Ky senator not politically motivated

The FBI is investigating Rene Boucher after the Saturday incident at Senator Paul's Bowling Green home that sent Kentucky's junior senator to the hospital with 5 broken ribs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – An attorney for the man accused of assaulting Senator Rand Paul insists the situation was not politically motivated and was a matter between two neighbors "most people would regard as trivial".

The FBI is investigating Rene Boucher after the Saturday incident at Senator Paul's Bowling Green home that sent Kentucky's junior senator to the hospital with 5 broken ribs.

Boucher, 59, has been charged with assault, Kentucky State Police have not released a motive.

A spokesman for Senator Paul released a statement that they would not comment as the matter is under investigation.

Attorney's full statement:

Senator Paul and Dr. Boucher have been next door neighbors for 17 years. They are also prominent members of the local medical community and worked together when they were both practicing physicians. The unfortunate occurrence of November 3rd has absolutely nothing to do with either's politics or political agendas. It was a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors over a matter that most people would regard as trivial. We sincerely hope that Senator Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible.
