'This is scary': Grand jury indicts former JCPS band teacher on rape, sex abuse charges

Cyr T. Wilson's charges stem from when he was the assistant band director at the Academy @ Shawnee.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A former Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) band teacher was indicted by a Louisville grand jury on multiple rape and sex abuse charges on Monday.

Cyr T. Wilson has been charged with three counts of third-degree rape and one count of first-degree sex abuse.

According to prosecutors, the charges stem from a series of alleged criminal incidents between Aug. 1, 2017 through June 30, 2020. During that time, Wilson was employed as the assistant band director at the Academy @ Shawnee.

JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said Wilson became a teacher and assistant band director at the Academy in January of 2020.

It's unclear if the incidents involved students.

"This is scary; this is real scary because it's hitting me real close to home for me," JCPS parent Nicole Friendly said.

Callahan said Wilson has been "reassigned" from his band and teaching duties "pending JCPS policies and procedures."

She also said in a later statement that according to his resume, while in college from 2017 to 2019, he was the Marching Band Ensemble Coordinator with the band boosters at Ballard High School.

"My son is in band, I went to his band class with him, and for it to be a band, a JCPS teacher period, that worries me and it should worry JCPS too," Friendly said.

She hopes JCPS will take this as a wakeup call and cautiously assess potential educator applicants in the future.

"You just can't do stuff like that; you got to screen your applicants better, you got to for the sake of our children, please," said Friendly.

Wilson will be arraigned in court on Jan. 8, 2024. He's being held on a $10,000 bond.
