LMPD arrests suspect in carjacking on I-65 at Outer Loop

Police said the victim had damage to his left eye and that his voice was hoarse after the carjacking.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police have arrested a man for a carjacking that happened on I-65 at the Outer Loop exit on Thursday.

According to the arrest citation, officers found the suspect, 45-year-old Jason Calhoun, in a wrecked vehicle around 12:40 p.m. near the Outer Loop and Preston Highway area and suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Before officers found him, police said they were called to I-65 at Outer Loop for a possible carjacking around 7:30 a.m. Investigators were able to connect the two incidents.

The victim's vehicle had broken down at the I-65 North, Outer Loop exit, so police said he left and returned in his wife's vehicle.

When he pulled up behind the broken-down vehicle, police said he saw Calhoun walking behind it.

Documents show while the victim was sitting in the driver's seat, Calhoun opened his driver's side door and demanded the vehicle.

The victim said there was a gun in between the driver's seat and the center console, and that Calhoun tried to reach for it.

They ended up fighting over the gun, and documents show the victim had "obvious footprints" from Calhoun on his clothing.

The victim told police he also heard Calhoun say "give me your eyeball" and even hooked his finger inside the victim's eye socket.

After fighting for a little while longer, documents show Calhoun put the victim in a headlock and began to choke the victim. The victim told police he was starting to lose consciousness at this point and "felt like he was going to die if he didn't do something."

Documents show the victim got control of the gun and fired multiple shots at Calhoun until he let go of the victim.

The victim got out of his wife's vehicle and police said Calhoun got in and put the vehicle in reverse. He tried to drive onto the exit ramp when a semi truck then hit the vehicle; LMPD said the damage to both the vehicle and the semi truck is estimated to be over $1,000.

Both Calhoun and the victim were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive according to authorities.

Hospital staff said the victim's left eye is damaged. Police said the victim had visible injuries on his face and that his voice was hoarse.

Calhoun is charged with attempted murder, strangulation, robbery and criminal mischief.
