LANESVILLE, Indiana — A southern Indiana man is dead following a tense standoff with police in Floyd County on Thursday.

Officials said the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) and Southeast Regional SWAT Team (SERS) were attempting to serve a warrant in the 800 block of Green Row Road in Lanesville around 4:30 p.m.

Police said the suspect, Daniel South, had an active arrest warrant for felony stalking.

According to an FCSO spokesperson, South had communicated “homicidal threats” and officers had previously recovered multiple firearms from his home on a prior search warrant.

SERS members contacted South through a window of his home, officials said.

FCSO Chief Jeff Firkins said after police announced their presence and asked him to leave the home, South allegedly began firing several gunshots from inside the home.

Firkins said due to the location of South’s home, a few neighbors were evacuated, and two nearby roads were also closed.

South would not comply with officers’ commands to leave the home and reportedly continued to fire gunshots in the direction of officers, Firkins said.

The police chief said when officers made their way into the home, South was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Firkins said officers did not return fire during the incident.

The FCSO Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate the incident.

Firkins said no more information would be released at this time.
