Police: Man facing eviction shoots, kills 86-year-old homeowner in Adair County

Police believe the suspect shot and killed a homeowner because he was in the process of being evicted from the property.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A 57-year-old man has been arrested after shooting and killing an elderly man in Adair County.

Kentucky State Police said the incident happened Saturday morning on Old Montpelier Road.

In their preliminary investigation, police said Joseph South of Columbia was being evicted from a property he was renting from 86-year-old Earl Coffey.

Police said South went to the home and fired several shots, which hit Coffey and resulted in his death.

Four others were also inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Police said South was arrested at the scene by the Adair County Sheriff's Office.

He was charged with murder and four counts of wanton endangerment.

South is currently being held at the Adair County Jail.
